I am not a big fan of stats, but when my selection for Rookie of the Year is Chris Pontius and he's leading the rookie class in scoring then I will stop and write a blog about how amazing I am. So let me tell you the way of how amazing I am.
After a few weeks off, we have returned just in time to see the Rookie class have quite the week. Steve Zakuani was the man of the match against the San Jose Earthquarkes with a Goal and an Assist. Also, across the country we got to see Rodney Wallace and Chris Pontius put a few in the back of the net.
Sean Keay: After a full preseason, and a couple games under your belt. Do you feel like you are up to speed with the MLS game? What was the biggest transition from the College game to the Pro's other then the speed of the game?
Steve Zakuani: The biggest transition is the speed of play, and speed of thought. Everything happens a lot quicker, and at a much higher level. Like every new venture, it took me some time to adjust but I feel fine now, I'm enjoying it and still earning everyday, it's been great. The main things I've had to improve are off the ball things like tracking back and defending more, because I'm playing in midfield here, not up top like in college.
SK: What's the best part about moving to Seattle? And what is the worst part about leaving Akron.
In week 3 we see another week pass where the 2009 draft class was in fine form, we had 2 goals from the rookies. Zakuani scored his first of the season against Toronto FC, which keeps the sounders top of the table for now. Then at the bottom of the table we have Omar Gonzalez potting a goal via header which was a huge upside to drafting him.
With another weekend come and gone, we have a bit of a change in the Rookie Rankings. The L.A. Galaxy had a bye this week and with that, A.J. Delagarza and Omar Gonzalez had dropped a bit. It is a shame that they have to drop down without them making any mistakes but with only two weeks in they have to be bumped down because of other player’s performances.
Welcome back to the Rookie report, in week two we get to see only 8 players not get involved in a MLS match. It is quite an incredible feet when you think about it, when a lot of fans across the league criticize the draft saying that the draft does not get kids ready for the pro’s. It must if you have all these kids get solid minutes in the second week of the season.
