Sources close to MLSDraft.net indicate there are strong rumours that Akron standout Steve Zakuani is going to pass on his final two years with the Zips and jump to MLS. The former Arsenal boy moved to the NCAA in 2007 in hopes of getting an education and becoming a professional soccer player. No one expected “Zaks” would lead the nation in points and goals in his sophomore year, tallying 20 goals and 7 assists. The striker was a force to be reckoned with this year.
Europe could be an option for him, but i just cant see him making big waves in europe since the NCAA isnt mean jack to them over there. He should be looking @ the MLS unless his agent and his brother is pulling in favours. But from what ive heard he is going pro.
I've just heard from one of the guys on the Akron team that Steve-o is going to go professional. I don't know too much else at this stage, but I believe he has signed with an agent and is now weighing up his options - mls or europe
This pretty much confirms it! This was posted on ohiomm.com

Men's soccer
The most talented player in school history never will step onto the pitch at Lee Jackson Field again.
Steve Zakuani's career at Akron is over, a source tells me. The nation's leading scorer will enter the Major League Soccer draft. Word of his departure began to circulate this morning.
Coaches feared that Zakuani would leave after last season, but he stayed. Coach Caleb Porter understands that Zakuani would choose to earn money during the prime of his career. That does not mean Porter is happy to lose the nation's top offensive weapon.
I am a little surprised that Zakuani is playing pro soccer in the United States, rather than his home country of England. However, Zakuani has a legitimate chance to be the No. 1 pick in the MLS draft. That would boost Porter's recruiting efforts.
