If you came here to have me gush about how great Fredy Montero was, you came to the wrong site. Don’t get me wrong, I had him winning the golden boot this year (TheScore.Com MLS Preview). But this blog is about the two rookies who played last night.
At first I was worried that the two would sit on the bench all night. In the end the stars aligned and we got to see both college stars get into the game. The one thing that really surprised me was that they both were more involved with defense then attacking.
Jeremy Hall entered the game in the 1st half after the Red Bulls went down 2-0, he was invisible for the most part. He did combine with Dane Richards for a couple runs down the wing but to his defense, not a single player on the Red Bulls were really impressive or even played well. After watching this team play, I do believe that Hall will be getting a lot of time on the field as New York look to be a disaster in the making.
On the other side of the field we got to see the NCAA golden boot winner debut for Seattle. Zakuani looked very nervous when he stepped out on the field and he made a few awkward passes, but when he made a mistake he was the first one down the field to stop his man. I was really impressed with Zakuani’s defensive skills; he shut down Richards in the second half. If he can keep that up and start attacking defenders with the confidence he had in college, he will be a force in this league for years to come.
I should have more rookie updates on sunday, so stay tuned!
Jeremy Hall played really well
