When attending the 2009 draft combine there was quite a buzz around two players, Steve Zakuani and Omar Gonzalez. All the scouts came to watch these two players play as they had lead there team to impressive records in the NCAA. However the two players everyone came to see left scouts with more questions then answers. Zakuani showed up tired, out of shape and looked selfish; Omar Gonzalez was then questioned by some for his speed and for his readiness for the professional game. At that moment scouts started to shift on the two players and looked to more polished players. Cue Sam Cronin, the hard nosed midfielder who even in a combine where he was ranked as the top central midfielder put in 110 % and even left the field with stitches to his lip.
The 2009 draft feels like years ago, where a young man born and raised in London, England turned down professional offers from his home land just to test his fate and enter the MLS Draft. On the other end of the spectrum was Tampa native Ben Jata living out him and his father’s dream of being drafted into the MLS when the Chicago Fire selected him 58th overall. The storylines could not have been any better for the MLS marketing team, but the stories were not needed when the skill of the players overshadowed the stories.
This morning we are lead to believe that David Beckham will return to Europe on a loan deal to AC Milan. This comes to a bit of a surprise to most MLS fans as we had always heard that the Galaxy would never part with David. If he was to come down with an injury on a loan spell then the LA Galaxy's marketing tool is lost. So it must come down to two factors. One, David must be pushing the Galaxy hard for the loan deal, he wants to play for England and nothing can stop him. Two, is the fact that Milan must be paying a boat load of his salary which saves the Galaxy money in the end while still having the face of the MLS, David Beckham.
